Vitamin D revisited

It has been three years since we highlighted the benefits of Vitamin D in Dental Currents. Click to link to the March 2008 article. Since that time, a tidal wave of interest has finally been shed on this important vitamin. It is so important for our heath and well being that the body does not even depend on the diet to provide it. It is called the “Sunshine Vitamin” because our skin can synthesize it when stimulated by the ultraviolet rays of the sun. It can and should be taken in supplement form as well, especially in the winter time, since few foods contain sufficient vitamin D. It is important in the absorption of calcium in the gut so I recommend taking it as part of a high quality multivitamin/mineral supplement.

It is interesting to note that vitamin D is essential for periodontal health by helping control inflammation and reduce bleeding gums. As well, the Canadian Cancer Society and Osteoporosis Canada have also increased their recommended levels of Vitamin D to 1,000 IU per day. This is almost 5 times what it used to be! Also, the older you get, the more you need to supplement.

Now that spring is coming, getting out in the sun without sunscreen for a short time each day is easy and healthy. This is more important as we get older since vitamin D needs increase as we age.

Wait no longer. Get out in the sunshine (and grab a little exercise while you’re there) and start a Vitamin D supplementation program now.

We introduced Briana Southward, our certified nutritionist a couple months ago. She would be happy to help you set up a balanced program of nutritional supplementation to suit your needs. Contact her at briana.s@revercellnutrition.com
