Melatonin
Summary of an article in the Ontario Dental Association Journal by Dr. Peter Copp. He is a dentist/anesthetist who practices in Toronto and teaches at the University of Toronto Faculty of Dentistry.
Melatonin is a hormone produced in our body by the pineal
gland. It is secreted at night to induce and enhance sleep. It can also be purchased
as a nutritional supplement in which case, it is best known for its hypnotic
effect as a sleep aid. The same hypnotic effect that can induce sleep, however,
can also be used to decrease dental anxiety
and produce sedation. This is very interesting for
those who may be a little anxious about their dental appointment and prefer
to have something more than local anesthetic (freezing).
Dr. Copp reports that melatonin’s sedation effect is comparable to midazolam,
a prescription sedative in the same class as valium and ativan. Unlike several
prescription sedatives, however, melatonin
has virtually no side effects and is tolerated well even in children.
Here is another big difference! Melatonin is a natural substance so it cannot
be patented like other drugs. Hence, it is relatively inexpensive. It can be
purchased in many health food stores and pharmacies in 3 milligram tablets or
capsules as a sleep aid. We will be keeping some in the office for those interested
in trying it or you can buy your own. Plan to arrive at least 30 to 60 minutes
prior to your appointment to let one tablet dissolve under your tongue. Alternatively,
you can drop by to pick up a dose any time prior to your appointment date. There
is no charge for this service.
Caution- you should probably not be driving any distance after your appointment
due to possible drowsiness.
