Dental Currents - November 2008
Bad Breath; Part two- What to do about it.
Over 92% of those who responded to our recent “bad breath survey” encouraged us to offer a “fresh breath” program in our office. The comments indicated how significant this problem is for some people, what efforts they put forward to try to mask the situation and how sensitive this issue is for everyone.
Until recently, bad breath or halitosis has been down played by the dental profession. We did not want to judge someone’s breath odour, especially if we did not know how to treat it. All we could offer was more dental hygiene appointments and tell you to clean your teeth more often. We all know this didn’t work so dentists and hygienists tried to avoid the problem altogether. Now we know there is a better way.
Orafresh is a system pioneered by Anne Bosy, a dental hygienist and researcher. Anne founded and operated the “Fresh Breath Clinic” in Toronto for 15 years. Over that period, she treated over 5,000 people from around the world with over a 90% success rate. She is now “coming out of the closet” with her scientifically proven program to adapt it to family dental practices. You have encouraged us to be involved and we thank you.
We are very impressed with the Orafresh results not only in treating bad breath but in successfully managing periodontal disease. As you may know, those with bleeding gums almost always have a breath problem associated with these ‘open wounds’. What was enlightening was that even people with healthy gums may have breath problems originating from their tonsils or tongue. Stress and aging are two major causes of breath problems, but kids can suffer as well.
As part of a thorough dental examination, we will offer an Orafresh computerized, confidential breath analysis to you at no extra charge. If you would like this confidential analysis, please don’t eat, drink, smoke, clean your teeth or use mouthwash for two hours prior to your appointment. This may simply mask the real problem and give you a false sense of security. If you would like this service, let us know at the beginning of your appointment so that we don’t get your teeth cleaned before you decide to participate.
For those who don’t do as well as they would like on the confidential test, you are not a bad person. Best of all, we can set up an Orafresh treatment program to identify the cause of your problem and how to treat it. You will see results very quickly not only with fresher breath and improved sense of taste and smell but in how others react to you when up close. Bleeding gums will soon be distant memory.
